Russian easter, "Pascha"

This over weekend, the temperature reached 20C, early summer already has come right here. I saw that people walk outside without overcoats and they looked so delighted with this new season. Apart from the weather changes, there was another reason why people became lively.  This Sunday was Easter, called "Pascha" in Russian. As the Easter festive week, lots of things happen in the town.

モスクワは週末に気温が20度近くに上がり、一気に夏が訪れたかのよう。ジャケットを片手に行き交う人々の表情は明るく輝いています。みんな待ちわびていた季節の到来です。街がにぎわっている理由は、お天気のせいだけではありません。この日曜日は、ロシア正教会におけるイースター、ロシア語で「パスハ」でした。この1週間はイースター祭でイベントが盛りだくさんなのです。。



The day before Pascha, on Holy Saturday, the believers bring an Easter cake and eggs to be blessed by the priest.  In my neighberhood, there is a site for constructing a new church. Last Saturday, I saw many people gathered there. My curiosity let me join this ceremony.  Easter cakes and eggs were decorated with flower or egg motif in sweet pastel color, wrapped by a lovely tea cloth and brought in natural baskets.  Not too much fancy, just simply beautiful.  I think this is good taste of Russian life.

イースター前日の土曜日（Holy Saturday）に、信者は美しく装飾したケーキと卵を持って教会を訪れ、司祭にお清めしてもらいます。我が家の近所の教会建築予定地（！）でもたくさんの人が集まっていました。思い思いにデコレーションされたケーキや卵の美しいこと。素朴なかごの中で可愛らしいティークロスに包まれた、甘くて淡い色彩たち。華美になり過ぎない、ロシア人の生活美を垣間見たような気がしました。

While the priest was blesssing, believers lit the small candles and prayed. It was such peaceful silence.
司祭が祝福の言葉を唱える間、小さなろうそくに火を灯し信者は共にお祈りします。
穏やかな静けさが広がる、美しい光景でした。

This year, Moscow city government holds Pasha festival in several places. On streets around the city center, Pascha markets came up and lovely stalls selling Pascha stuff, such as cakes, apple candies, tea clothes, ginger breads and so on. It is very enjoyable to see each stalls, and also I found nice activities for kids.  No matter if you are not Christians, you would spend fun time with your family.
今年の「パスハ」はモスクワ市内でフェスティバルとして、様々なイベントが企画されています。
センター周辺のストリートでは、可愛らしいマーケットが現れました。パスハにちなんだ、ケーキ、りんご飴、ティークロスが屋台に並び、見ているだけでワクワクしてしまいます。子どもたちのために様々なゲームが用意されているので、家族みんなで楽しむことができるでしょう。

Easter Market in Moscow

 

According to Moscow city website, this festival is cooperated with monastries and churchs.  I visited one of them, Vysoko-Petrovsky monastry.  This monastly is usually very quiet even located in the central city, but during this festival it looked more visiters friendly. Play equipments and the music stage are temporaly set for the guests.  If you visit there,  I recommend to have lunch at the cafeterior which is opened for anyone.  The atmosphere is very special,　surrounded by great pictures of saints on ceiling, perhaps you feel like being Russian christians.

このイベント、市内各地の修道院や教会とも連携しています。私が訪れたのは、ヴィソコ・ペテロフスキー修道院。市内中心にありながら、いつもはひっそりとしているこの修道院。ところがこのフェスティバル期間には、ちょっとした子どもの遊具やステージまで設けられ、とてもオープンな雰囲気でした。この修道院のおすすめは、誰でも利用できる食堂です。天井いっぱいに描かれた聖人画をながめながら、ちょっと信者になった気分になれるかも・・しれません。

The taste of spring, Kolomna Pastila

In March, spring warm weather arrived and our family took a weekend trip to Kolomna city which is located 110km southeast from Moscow. Kolomna was founded in 1177, one of the ancient cities around Moscow, remains a part of old citadel(Kremlin).  Inside of Kremlin, there is a charming town with a couple of Russian churches, a monastry and Russian country houses, this nostalgic scenery takes us to old Russian world.  Kolomna Kremlin stands at the point where Oka river and Moscow river merges, this situation makes breathtaking view from the hill. I would say that Kolomna is a perfect destination for weekend relaxing.
3月、暖かな春風に誘われて、郊外へ出かけたくなりました。訪れたのはモスクワ近郊の小さな都市、コロムナ。モスクワより約110ｋｍ南東、1177年に創設された歴史のある街です。中心には14世紀に造られた城壁（クレムリン）の一部が残り、そのクレムリン内部には教会、修道院や可愛らしい田舎風の民家が保存されています。ノスタルジックな風景を見ていると、昔のロシアへタイムスリップした気分になります。クレムリンはオカ川とモスクワ川に囲まれており、少し離れた丘から眺めると素晴らしい古都の情景が楽しめます。モスクワからそう遠くないので、週末リラックスして過ごすのにおすすめの場所です。

Another reason for my visit Koloma is this sweet, called "Pastila".
私がコロムナを訪れた理由はほかにもありました。「パスチーラ」と呼ばれるコロムナで有名なお菓子です。

                     

A couple of months ago, I saw the video about Kolomna Pastila.  Pastila is a Russian traditional sweet, oven-dried dessert made from whipped berry or apple puree. The taste is very light with  fresh sweet flavor and the color is soft pink like a spring flower.   Kolomna Pastila was well known in 18tn century, however after Russian revolution of 1917, unfortunately this taste dissapeared under Soviet government. About 100years later, in 2009 the projects of the "Kolomna Pastila Museum" and "Museum Factory" are created with assistance of the Charity Fund. I think it is a quite interesting project to preserve an immaterial heritage like tastes, smells, ways of life. According to the local guide gook, in 2011, 25000 people visited this small museum! It is definately a great example of promoting Russian regional city.
数ヶ月前、コロムナのパスチーラに関するビデオを見たのがきっかけです。パスチーラはロシアの伝統菓子で、酸っぱいりんごかベリーをピューレ状にし、焼き上げたものです。さくさくと軽い食感、ふわっと漂う甘酸っぱい香り、やさしいピンク色。春のお茶うけにぴったりです。とりわけコロムナは18世紀、良質なパスチーラ作りで有名でしたが、1917年のロシア革命後その味は徐々に消え去っていったそうです。それから約100年たった2009年、「コロムナパスチーラ・ミュージアム」と「工場博物館」がチャリティファンドの支援で創設されました。昔の味、香りや生活そのものを遺産として保存している点で、大変興味深いプロジェクトです。ガイドによると2011年にはこの小さな博物館に25000人が訪れたそうです。ロシアの地方都市振興のすばらしい成功例といえそうです。

I visited Pastila museum to join excursion of history. Before starting, already so many people are waiting outside and I slipped into it on time.  Museum has lovely retro interior and story tellers or assistant ladies wear beautiful antique costumes, all these things take us a timetrip to old Russia. The first part of excursion was about Kolomna pastila history and the procedure of making Pastila.
パスチーラ・ミュージアムでその歴史を学ぶツアーに参加しました。始まる前からすでに沢山の人が待っていましたが、なんとか滑り込み。。ミュージアムのインテリアはレトロでとても可愛らしく、従業員女性の服装も素敵なアンティーク調で、昔のロシアの世界へ案内してくれているかのよう。ツアーの第一部はコロムナ　パスチーラの歴史と作り方の説明。

 

In the second part, we moved to another room and mini tea party was held. About 8types of Pastila were served with delicious tea. The storyteller explained each type of Pastila and we ate one by one. It was such a lovely time with nice tea and sweets, also I was impressed with this tea room. Antique furniture and decorations are preserved in well conditions. I am sure that all ladies would like this place.
第２部は隣の部屋で、お茶会が開かれました。８種類くらいのパスチーラが美味しいお茶とともに用意されており、司会者が説明するのを聞きながら、一種類ずつ試食していきます。美味しいお茶とお菓子、それはそれは幸せな時間。お部屋自体の可愛さにも、女性ならときめかずにはいられないでしょう！１００年以上前のアンティーク家具や装飾品がきれいに保存されているのです。

Apart from Pastila, I found another interesting museum&shop which is selling a unique bread called "Kalachi". I couldn't join the excurtion, so I don't have much knowledge about this bread.  I just read some articles on internet and it said that Kalachi is also revival food which was lost during Soviet era. This bread is shaped like a basket,  made of only flour, salt and water. No eggs, no oils and no sugar.  They don't sell dozens of Kalach at one time, so I saw long queue outside of the shop.  Some lucky customers can taste hot&fresh Kalachi just after baking in Pechka(Russian stove).
パスチーラ以外にも、おもしろいミュージアム兼ショップを見つけました。それは「カラチ」とよばれるユニークな形のパンを売っている店です。ツアーに参加しなかったので詳しいことはわかりませんが、パスチーラ同様にソビエト時代に失われた味を甦らせたお店だそうです。このパンは一見バスケットのような形で、原材料は小麦粉、塩にお水だけ。卵や油、砂糖は使われていないそうです。一度にたくさん販売していないため、お店の外には長い列が出来ていました。ラッキーなお客さんはペチカ（ロシアのストーブ）で焼きたての、あつあつ新鮮なカラチをいただけるのです！

Kalachi bread

 I bought a couple of boxes of Pastila for myself and enjoy spring tea time. The taste of Pastila is light, elegant and delicate, reminds me of Japanese traditional sweets for tea. Even after tasting all pastilas, I will keep these beautiful boxes for the interior decorations.
お土産にギフトボックス入りのパスチーラをいくつか購入し、春のお茶を楽しんでいます。パスチラの味は軽やかで、上品、繊細で、日本のお茶菓子と似ている気がします。パスチーラを全部食べた後でも、この美しいギフトボックスは残してお部屋のデコレーションにでも使いたいと思っています。
