The taste of spring, Kolomna Pastila

In March, spring warm weather arrived and our family took a weekend trip to Kolomna city which is located 110km southeast from Moscow. Kolomna was founded in 1177, one of the ancient cities around Moscow, remains a part of old citadel(Kremlin).  Inside of Kremlin, there is a charming town with a couple of Russian churches, a monastry and Russian country houses, this nostalgic scenery takes us to old Russian world.  Kolomna Kremlin stands at the point where Oka river and Moscow river merges, this situation makes breathtaking view from the hill. I would say that Kolomna is a perfect destination for weekend relaxing.

Another reason for my visit Koloma is this sweet, called "Pastila".

A couple of months ago, I saw the video about Kolomna Pastila.  Pastila is a Russian traditional sweet, oven-dried dessert made from whipped berry or apple puree. The taste is very light with  fresh sweet flavor and the color is soft pink like a spring flower.   Kolomna Pastila was well known in 18tn century, however after Russian revolution of 1917, unfortunately this taste dissapeared under Soviet government. About 100years later, in 2009 the projects of the "Kolomna Pastila Museum" and "Museum Factory" are created with assistance of the Charity Fund. I think it is a quite interesting project to preserve an immaterial heritage like tastes, smells, ways of life. According to the local guide gook, in 2011, 25000 people visited this small museum! It is definately a great example of promoting Russian regional city.
Kolomna Pastila museum

I visited Pastila museum to join excursion of history. Before starting, already so many people are waiting outside and I slipped into it on time.  Museum has lovely retro interior and story tellers or assistant ladies wear beautiful antique costumes, all these things take us a timetrip to old Russia. The first part of excursion was about Kolomna pastila history and the procedure of making Pastila.

In the second part, we moved to another room and mini tea party was held. About 8types of Pastila were served with delicious tea. The storyteller explained each type of Pastila and we ate one by one. It was such a lovely time with nice tea and sweets, also I was impressed with this tea room. Antique furniture and decorations are preserved in well conditions. I am sure that all ladies would like this place.
Kolomna Pastila has several flavors

Apart from Pastila, I found another interesting museum&shop which is selling a unique bread called "Kalachi". I couldn't join the excurtion, so I don't have much knowledge about this bread.  I just read some articles on internet and it said that Kalachi is also revival food which was lost during Soviet era. This bread is shaped like a basket,  made of only flour, salt and water. No eggs, no oils and no sugar.  They don't sell dozens of Kalach at one time, so I saw long queue outside of the shop.  Some lucky customers can taste hot&fresh Kalachi just after baking in Pechka(Russian stove).

Kalachi bread
I bought a couple of boxes of Pastila for myself and enjoy spring tea time. The taste of Pastila is light, elegant and delicate, reminds me of Japanese traditional sweets for tea. Even after tasting all pastilas, I will keep these beautiful boxes for the interior decorations.

Memory of Sochi Olympic

It was such a lovely moment, the white bear blew out the flame and Sochi olympic was officialy closed.
While I was wacthing it, I felt so sad and almost cried. Since I came to Russia, Sochi olympic things were always seen around my life. Finally it started and only after two weeks, I have to say good bye to them.
Then, I was tempted to buy olympic official goods and went last-minute shopping at GUM department store.

This is the Olympic decorations of GUM.

Probably you remember this beautiful and colorful tapestry, which appeared anywhere around olympic games.
This is the key design of Sochi Olympic, called  Russian patchwork quilt.
I love this design so much, because it is the great presentation of  Russian folkloric art.

It was created by BOSCO company which owns more than 100 boutiques of fashion clothes and luxury accessories in RUSSIA. According to their website, every patch was infused with the history and the personality of traditional crafts from each of Russias 89 regions. In a single tapestry, they combined many numbers of design patterns as you can see below. Also check out the original information of Bosco website; http://sochi2014.bosco.ru/en/. (Click "LOOK OF THE GAMES" and you will reach the following pictures. If you click each picture, the pop up window will tell you more about design).

http://sochi2014.bosco.ru/en/.

From these design, we realize that there are so many different local traditions in Russia.  Once this huge land was totally united by Soviet union, but original design and tradition are inherited in each region.  Certainly we see them in this patchwork.  That is the point I like.  Behind the great success of Sochi, I heard that  many people of regions complain that the government put enormous money to Sochi and other places are poor. I wish Russian government  pays more attention to improve the quality of life in any regions.  It will make a beautiful harmony of Russia, like this patchwork.

For my memory of Russia,  I bought a cap, a boy's T-shiit, a photo flame and the white bear in Sochi design.

Russian Packaging Exhibition -part2

Hi, there. I've been busy as the private guide for my family from Japan. It was a nice opportunity to see Russia with fresh eyes. I'll tell you what I found, but this time I continue to write about Russian Packages.
The beginning of 20centuty was the time for world wars and revolutions.  It reflects on packages as well. Even sweets  packages were designed by such realistic images like this.

Russian packages in the beginning of 20C.

Under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin, the Bolsheviks established the Soviet state in 1917 and became the world first communist country.  In Soviet era, package design was like propaganda,  "red" color with Soviet symbols such as hummer, sickles and stars.

On the other hand, in 1920s the masterpieces of Russian constructivism art were created. Especially some posters collaborated by Vladimir Mayakovsky(text) and Alaksandr Rodchenko(image) are so famous as Avant-garde design. Unfortunately constructivism art was rejected by the Stalinist government(1924-1953) and eventually was disappeared.

Personally I like the design in the middle of 20century(1950-1970).  Through my eyes, it looks well mixed Russian forkloric art and constructivism. The whole impression is modern and still attractive beyond the time. I wish Russian sweets company would make revival packages, should be smush hit!!

Russian packages in the middle of 20C.

Through this exhibition, the most impressive one was this pretty bag which designed for souveniors in 1957.
I can't believe that it was created more than a half century ago.  It looks modern, but the graphic design is thought to be inspired by Russian folk art.

Last two centuries, Russia has changed dramatically and packaging design was always adjusted to each era. Then, how is like today's Russia?  Maybe the time to open the door to outside. Now the most of products and packages are import, hardly see Russian ones. It's pity, but I am sure the time will repeat. The forthcoming era will bring original design more.

Russian packaging exhibition - part 1

Recently one of the most impressive exhibition is "Packaging Design Made in Russia" held by Moscow Design Museum.  It started from April and original site was Manazinaya squre.  Now the exhibision was moved in  “Rabochiy i Kolhozniza(Worker and Kolkhoz Woman)” Exhibition Hall, which is the building underneath the giant soviet statue.  This hall is unexpectedly new....seems like just after interior renovation.

"Worker and Kholhoz woman " Exhibition centre

In the hall, I found the milk pack shaped sign. It friendly welcame me.
The display counter was also designed in milk pack....cool!

The exhibition shows us the history of Russian packaging design and materials from the late of 19c to now. Along the timeline, we can also learn Russian social movements.  In this country, the art is always strongly connected with social and political issues.
At the beginning, I saw fancy and noble packages made in the end of 19C.  It was the late time of Romanov, the emperor extremely enforced autocracy and drived to develop national industry and economy.
This social development led to a large increase in the size of the urban bourgioisie and working class.
These beautiful packages are supposed to be luxury gift items among those bourgeoisies. Especially, tin cans of carameles decorated with delicate romantic design.

In the beginning of 20C, the working class was so frustrated with abysmal living and working conditions that they frequently striked and made radical parties against Imperial Russia and wealthy bourgioisies.  Some of packages shows this situation by cynical illustrations. For example, the caramel package below is the cartoon that Proletarians push out   bourgeoisies.

To be continued......what will happen after Russian revolution??

Play in the little wonderland

We are having beautiful summer days at the moment. Bright sunshine, fresh green and long daytime.
Children can play outside until 9~10PM, because it's still light. I feel so happy and peaceful to hear kids voice all day from outside.
Compared to my country, playgrounds are well organized and well maintained in Moscow.  Each residencial building has its own playground in a courtyard, no matter the building is old or new.  I suppose that it was a part of city planning in Soviet era.  If you have a chance to walk around  residencial area, just come into the courtyard, you will find the little wonderland.

Almost every playground has a big gymnastic complex like this. How fantastic! It's just free for anyone.
I like the design of roof tops. They look like the top of Russian church or circus.

Russian playground equipments

Playhouse and sand box are popular among young children.
The design is also beautiful and colorful. One design is like the Forest decorated with trees, mushrooms and butterflies.
The other one is like the Sea decorated with dolphines, tropical fish and crabs.  I am impressed by fine details.

Rocking chairs are designed in friendly shapes, such as horse, bee, rooster, dolphin, boat, elf and so on..

Some playgrounds still remains hand-made equipments. They are lovely, too.

Russian hand-made playhouse

By the way, I notice that most of equipments have this brand logo"КСИЛ"(KCIL).
This company is from Saint petersburg,  the first  and the largest manufacture of kid's playground in Russia. According to the website, this company  has got several certificates of international safety standards.  So, they are proud of quality and safety as well.

Generally speaking, Russian people love children so much that they have been creating comfortable play space for them. As a mother of two young children, I really appreciate this child friendly environment.  The little wonderland is just by my house!

A little tin, taste of my childhood

Today I write just a short short story, not like my last post, Bolshoi Theatre.  I am already back in my ordinary life.
I appreciate that my husband brings back nice souveniors whenever he takes a business trip.
He really knows me and selects exactly what I like.  What do I like? Well..I am not so intersted in typical or famous souveniors. I prefer some minor and local products.
Yesterday he came back from Saint Petersburg and gave me little ones.

The design of Russian tins
Wow!! This is " KAWAII".
Little tins with lovely illustrations printed. These illustrations are kind of retro, remind me of something in my childhood.  I shaked these tins and heard some little things were clattering inside.
Yes, there must be candy drops!  I expected round shaped drops and opened it....

Yes, there were candy drops, but .....not round shape.
How can I explain those shapes?  Look like just tiny, thin pieces of broken glass.
Size, Color and Shape are all different. Probably they were designed in particular shapes, but I can't find out the original looking.
This uneven quality control is very funny, but it's rather charming.
Today's mass production is too systematic and making huge numbers of copies in exactly the same way.  However, some Russian products still have full of humanity and remind us old times.

I ate some of them....yes, a taste of my childhood.
