Russian Railway

It's Vacation time in Russia. Many of expats flew to home or any other countries to relax.  If you spend summer in Russia and want to make your time slow down, why not take the train trip? In June, we took a night train for Petrozabodsk to visit Kizhi island. Petrozabodsk is the capital city of the Republic of Karelia in north Russia near the boader with Finland. By train, it takes about 14 hours from Moscow.

Kazansky station at midnight
The train and attendant of Russian railways
The train departured at midnight from Leningradskiy Railway station. It was Wednesday, though the middle of the week, the station was packed with passengers. By the train, the attendants stood dressed in uniform with a red bellet hat , they are usually women aged around 50. They shortly checked our e-tickets and allowed us to get in. We passed through the narrow aile and found our compartment with 4beds in the standard class.  In the cabin, it was dark and hot. At any stops, airconditioner and some lights were automatically turned off.

The standard class compartment
Probably there are two types of night trains running between Murmansk and Moscow. The new train has better cabins, such as "soft ", "business" or " luxury" class with a comfortable beds, private bathroom and restaurant wagon.  It seemed that we chose the old one, then our travel became more fun! For me, everything looked retro and cool, especially the hot water machine was interesting.

The hot water machine
On our old  train, there was a food/drink supply, but only tea, coffee and cookies served by the attendant. How could we make our appetite satisfied during 14hrs journey? On the route, we got only one stop where we could buy some food. When we arrived there, local vendors was waiting for us to sell ice-creams, beers, strawberries, newspapers, homemade bread and dried fish. The train stayed there for 30mins and we had a nice sunny break at the outdoor platform.

On the second day at 4PM, we finally arrived at Petrozavodsk station. The clear blue sky and the bright sunshine refreshed our eyes. I sensed the atmosphere in north Russia. Our adventure had just started.

Finally arrived at Petrozabodsk station!!

Design from Baltic countries- Latvia

After a long pause, I continue my report from Baltic countries.  We said good-bye to Tallin and drove down to Riga, the capital city of Latvia. What is the difference between these two countries? Riga is located the mouth of  the Daugava river, the city was already recorded in the early time of 2nd century as a viking route to Bizantium. Riga has been developed as the centre of trade and became the biggest city among Baltic countries. Compared to Tallin, the high buildings are spread out around the city centre. Some of buildings are well known as Art Nouveau style of 19th century, some other ones look typical Soviet style or modern high-tech style. Thus, my impression of Riga is like a little Moscow, there was more mixed culture. Besides, 40% of the population is Russian.

Riga city, the old town has wide variety of architecture.

Art Nouveau style was populer in Riga in the late of 19th century.

In the old town, some medieval architecures are preserved as same as Tallin, but unfortunately they are more commercialized. Flashy ads and shop signs are breaking the beautiful atmosphere. In other words, the city looks lively with economical activity.

My focus is of course, art and design. Let's discover the original design of Latvia! I visited the folk craft shop, Sena Klets where we can see Latvian traditional costumes, textiles, ties and so on. They look similar to Estonians, but mittons are very special and remarkable in Latvia.  See the variety of mitton designs!!

Latvian mittons

Latvia is the place where the oldest mittons (10th century) were founded.  Since the ancient times, they are very important part of Latvian life.  Especially before the wedding, the brides had to knit mittons for her family. Every pattern has its own meaning for wish.  Most of these patterns come from the Latvian tradition of deities and gods.
I bought these mittons for myself

Examples of Latvian traditional symbols

The intersting thing there is that nowadays these traditional symbols are revived by local designers.  They adopt them to comtemporary designs, such as homeware goods, clothing and acceseries. For example, I show the hotel where we stayed.  You can recognize Latvian design elements on its interior.
Traditional folk art reworks in modern design

Also, I found several stylish shops selling nice items crafted by local artists.

Gellery "ETOMO", selects the nice goods created by Latvian artists

In Tallin, I found that the traditonal folk art exits as they were, but here in Riga, they are revived in modern style to meet the demand of young generations. In history, both Estonia and Latvia had experienced occupation by several countries, therefore the original folk art plays an very important role of promoting cultural attractions.

Design from Baltic countries - Estonia

Hi there. Moscow is already in vacation mood.  The city is quieter, people and cars are less than usual.
The beginning of May, our family traveled in Estonia and Latvia.  These two Baltic countries are used to be parts of Soviet union and became independent in 1991, now join EU.  I was curious about the culture mixed up with European and Russian. After independence, how each country is developing and preserving their original culture? First we arrived in Talinn, the capital city of Estonia.

Well, in my impression, Estonia is almost like one of Scandinavian countries. Friendly English speaking people and eco&bio concious products and shops. The old town is beautifully preserved in medieval style. In this town, I hardly see nasty advertisements or signs, so it was very comfortable to walk around. I can say that the most attractive spots are hidden in back alleys. If you get there, don't miss them.

If you would like to see the Estonian folk art, I recommend the gellery&shop, Estonian Folk Art and Craft Union  ". It shows and sells traditional textiles, needle works, belts, mittons, sweaters from all over the land.  Interesting display is the Estonian textile patterns of each regions. In the Estonian traditional costume, the women wear the multi colored striped skirt and each region has own color combinations. That is fantastic!!

When I visited  TheEstonian Open Air Museum, the craft market was held and I realized that Estonian folk art is alive as it was. People love the traditional hand crafts and naturally use them in every day life. I also felt the love for their country. Estonian writer J.Lattik left the following words when Estonia faced the hard time, "An Estonian loves his home and his country so much that he may weep for them, weep as if he were weeping for his children...this kind of love is stronger than anything, stronger even than death."

An Estonian loves his home and his country so much that he may weep for them, weep as if he were weeping for his children...this kind of love is stronger than anything, stronger even than death."

Here, I show the souvenirs from Estonia.  Heartwarming little things make me happy.

I also found that Estonia has own nice brands, such as drinks, cosmetics, textiles or so. I've never seen them in other countries, even in Russia. However the quality and the design are excellent, attractive enough for the international market.
