Spring festival and the city

After long long winter time, Moscow city is slowly getting brighter with sunshine.
In this time, if you find colorful stalls just opened in the park , on streets, that is the start of spring festival called "Maslenitsa". Maslenitsa is the celebration of the end of winter.
*This is a belated post. This year Maslenitsa was 24Feb to 2Mar.

長い長い冬の間、モスクワはモノトーンの街並み。（今年は雪があまりなかったけど）
少し日差しが明るくなったころ、とってもカラフルな屋台が公園や通りに現れます。
春のお祭り、「マースレニッツァ」の始まりです。
※書く時間がなく遅れた投稿です。今年のマースレニッツァは2月24日～3月2日まででした。

Maslenitsa means Butter or Oil week.  Originaly Maslenitsa festival comes from religious traditions. It is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent—that is, the seventh week before Eastern Orthodox Pascha. During lent, meat and daily products are forbiddened, so Maslenitsa is the last week that people can eat them. Therefore, the characteristic food of Maslenitsa is "Blini" which is  Russian style pan cakes made from rich daily products. Also Blini is the symbol of the sun, because  it is round shape and yellow. This culture is telling us how important the sun is!

「マースレニッツァ」とは直訳すると「バター祭り」。（油っこそう！）
正教会における復活大祭（パスハ）の56日前から祭りがはじまり、1週間つづきます。今年は2月24日～3月2日まででした。このとき皆で食べるものといえば、これ「ブリヌィ」。ロシア風パンケーキです。黄色く丸い形から「太陽」の象徴といわれ、古くから儀式に用いられてきたそうです。宗教的(ロシア正教）には肉、卵、乳製品が禁じられる四旬節前にバター製品を食べきるという意味があるそうです。

For me, Maslenitsa festival is a great oppotunity to see the Russian local life such as, childrens' happy face with Blini, colorful deco and costumes of street stalls, a music parade in the traditional way. Maslenitsa festival is full of joys to welcome new season. People look so happy with big smile, not like stereotypes Russians who don't show smile.
このお祭りに参加すると、素顔のロシア人に触れられる感じがします。
ブリヌィに目を輝かせる子ども達、カラフルな原色コスチュームで迎えてくれる屋台のお姉さん、素朴な遊びに興じる大人とこども、伝統衣装で練り歩くパレード隊。
ふだんは気難しい顔のロシア人も、みんな笑顔、笑顔。「マースレニッツア」は春を迎える喜びで満ちているのです！

"Gorky Park" produced its own Maslenisa festival with well mixed traditonal and modern taste.

This park used to be an outdated amusement ground, but in last a couple of years, a young project team changed it into  a creative and experimental one.  This year, Maslenitsa by Gorkey park was like that; eye catching geometrical visual design and art works, stylish stalls by young designers, a rock concert instead of Russian fold music. Time is changing and the style of Maslenisa is already not only traditional one.
この伝統行事を現代の感性でアレンジしたのが、「ゴーリキーパーク」です。
この公園は数年前まで古びた遊園地だったのですが、最近30代前後の若いプロジェクトチームによりクリエイティブで実験的な公園に生まれ変わりました。そのゴーリキーパークが提案した今年の「マースレニッツァ」。
目をひく幾何学模様のビジュアルやオブジェ。若いクリエイターが出展する屋台。民俗音楽ではなく、ロックコンサート。
春を迎えるスタイルも時代とともに変わっていきます。

We eat blini wishing a happy and bright year.
でもみんな待ちわびていたのは「太陽」。
明るい一年になるよう、想いをこめてブリヌィをいただくのです。

At the end of Maslenitsa, people burn straw dolls wishing health and happiness.

 

Memory of Sochi Olympic

It was such a lovely moment, the white bear blew out the flame and Sochi olympic was officialy closed.
While I was wacthing it, I felt so sad and almost cried. Since I came to Russia, Sochi olympic things were always seen around my life. Finally it started and only after two weeks, I have to say good bye to them.
Then, I was tempted to buy olympic official goods and went last-minute shopping at GUM department store.

オリンピック閉幕セレモニーはいつもドラマティック。今回はあの巨大しろくまさんが炎を吹き消し幕を閉じました。
ロシアに来て約3年。いつも身近に見ていたオリンピックグッズともさよならかと思うと、ちょっと切なくなりました。
記念に公式グッズを買おうと思い立ち、グム百貨店へ。

This is the Olympic decorations of GUM.

Probably you remember this beautiful and colorful tapestry, which appeared anywhere around olympic games.
This is the key design of Sochi Olympic, called  Russian patchwork quilt.
I love this design so much, because it is the great presentation of  Russian folkloric art.

このとってもカラフルな織模様、たぶん覚えていらっしゃるでしょう。オリンピックゲームの会場にはいつもこの模様がありました。これは「ロシアン　パッチワークキルト」と名づけられたソチオリンピックのキーデザインです。私はこれがけっこう好きだったんです、ロシアの民芸デザインが凝縮されていて・・。

It was created by BOSCO company which owns more than 100 boutiques of fashion clothes and luxury accessories in RUSSIA. According to their website, every patch was infused with the history and the personality of traditional crafts from each of Russias 89 regions.  From these design, we realize that there are so many different local traditions in Russia.  Once this huge land was totally united by Soviet union, but original design and tradition are inherited in each region.  Certainly we see them in this patchwork.  That is the point I like.  Behind the great success of Sochi, I heard that  many people of regions complain that the government put enormous money to Sochi and other places are poor. I wish Russian government  pays more attention to improve the quality of life in any regions.  It will make a beautiful harmony of Russia, like this patchwork.

世界一大きな国、ロシア。各地方独自の伝統文化はバラエティーに富みます。ソ連時代には驚くべき統制力で、街の景色が統一されてしまいましたが、このような伝統文化は各地方で受け継がれているのですね。ソチのパッチワークデザインはそれを示してくれています。オリンピックの成功の影では、地方の多くの人々が生活改善されない現状に不満を抱いていると聞きます。この美しいパッチワークのように、地方も活気付く調和のとれた国であってほしいと願います。

Russian wooden toys and poetic world

Time is flying, we'll soon celebrate Christmas. Are you ready for giving nice gifts to your children?  My kids always want some fancy toys from TV ad which I don't like so much.  I believe that simple toys are better to develop their creativity. In old times, Russian people did a fantastic job of making wooden toys. You might remind Matryoshka doll, yes, of course it is world famous Russian folk art. However, Russian wooden toys have more variety.

This week I visited one of my favourite museums, All-Russian Decorative Applied and Folk Art Museum to see the exhibition, "Bogorodskoye Poem ".  This exhibition shows us more than 170examples of  Russian wooden toys made in Bogorodskoye 19c to 20c.

時間がたつのはあっという間。もうクリスマスですね。子ども達へのプレゼントはもう用意されましたか？
うちの子ども達はコマーシャルで見たおもちゃを欲しがって私を困らせます。もっとシンプルで創造力を育むようなおもちゃで遊んでほしいと願います。昔のロシア人は、木製のすばらしいおもちゃを作りました。木製おもちゃというと、マトリョーシカを思い出すかもしれません。もちろんそれは世界中で有名なロシアの代表的おもちゃですが、それだけではありません。もっと色々な種類があるんです。

今週私は、「全ロシア　装飾・応用とフォークアートミュージアム」を訪れました。『ボゴロドスコエの詩 』というタイトルでロシアの木製おもちゃが170点以上展示されているからです。

Exhibition "Bogorodskoye poem"

 

 Bogorodskoye is the name of a village near Sergiyev Posad. This village was the place to trade in wooden products and carvers started to make wooden toys in 17-18c. At the beginning, the design was simply one or a couple of figures of horses, hens or peasants.  In the half of 19c, it was eventually sophisticated to create more complicated and large scale compositions. Looking through the history, bears, rabbits, hens and some other small animals are always popular figures. They look like human beings,  playing and working together. I love it, very funny.
 ボゴロドスコエとはある村の名前で、１７～１８世紀ごろ木製製品の取引が盛んな場所だったそうです。そこで木製おもちゃが産まれました。当初のデザインは１体か２，３体が組み合っただけ、馬や鶏や農夫の人形が多かったそう。それが徐々に洗練されていき、複雑なデザインや大きなものが創られるようになりました。
どの時期を見ても、熊やうさぎは人気なデザインのようです。まるで人間のように遊んだり、働いている様子がなんとも愛らしくおかしいです。

Bears and rabbits are popular figures of Russian wooden toys

Some large sculptures represents the village life with wooden houses and peasants. Peasant figures are very tiny, but we can see their faces. Each peasant has different face and expression, so that we can imagine how they are going. It is just amazing.

大きな作品の中には、村の暮らしを表現したものもあります。木造のお家と農夫たち。この人形達はとっても小さいのですが各々が違った表情をしているのには驚きです。

Social trend always influenced on Russian art, which is seen in this exhibition as well.  This is one example,  the bear looking into space with a telescope. It was made in 1960s when Soviet union explored space.

社会の潮流はロシアのアートに大きな影響を及ぼしてきました。木製おもちゃも例外ではありません。一例として熊さんが望遠鏡で宇宙をのぞいているこの人形。ソ連が宇宙開拓で世にインパクトを残した1960年ごろのものです。

Indeed, it is worth to visit with children. Around Christmas time, they have special workshops to show carving. It will give great inspiration to children, should be better than plastic toys.

この展示、お子様連れにとってもおすすめです。クリスマスの時期には彫刻テクニックを学べるワークショップも予定されているようです。子どもにプラスチックのおもちゃをあげるより、ずっと素敵な親子体験になるのではないでしょうか？
