Hi there. Moscow is already in vacation mood. The city is quieter, people and cars are less than usual.
The beginning of May, our family traveled in Estonia and Latvia. These two Baltic countries are used to be parts of Soviet union and became independent in 1991, now join EU. I was curious about the culture mixed up with European and Russian. After independence, how each country is developing and preserving their original culture? First we arrived in Talinn, the capital city of Estonia.

5月上旬、私たち家族も休みを利用してエストニアとラトビアを旅しました。バルト海沿岸、旧ソ連圏の2カ国は1991年に独立し、今はＥＵに加盟しています。北ヨーロッパとロシア（ソ連）の文化がどのように混在しているのか、そして独立後発展する中、もともとの伝統文化はどのように受け継がれているのか？好奇心いっぱいで訪ねてみました。最初に到着したのは、エストニアの首都タリン。
Well, in my impression, Estonia is almost like one of Scandinavian countries. Friendly English speaking people and eco&bio concious products and shops. The old town is beautifully preserved in medieval style. In this town, I hardly see nasty advertisements or signs, so it was very comfortable to walk around. I can say that the most attractive spots are hidden in back alleys. If you get there, don't miss them.
印象としては、とても”北欧的”な街。英語を流暢に話す、フレンドリーな人々。そしてエコ＆ビオに特化した商品やお店の多いこと。旧市街は美しく保存され、中世の街並みを残しています。目障りな広告や看板はほとんど見られないので、心地よく散歩できます。注目すべきは路地裏で、そこにもっとも面白いスポットがあるのでお見逃しなく！
If you would like to see the Estonian folk art, I recommend the gellery&shop, " Estonian Folk Art and Craft Union ". It shows and sells traditional textiles, needle works, belts, mittons, sweaters from all over the land. Interesting display is the Estonian textile patterns of each regions. In the Estonian traditional costume, the women wear the multi colored striped skirt and each region has own color combinations. That is fantastic!!

When I visited TheEstonian Open Air Museum, the craft market was held and I realized that Estonian folk art is alive as it was. People love the traditional hand crafts and naturally use them in every day life. I also felt the love for their country. Estonian writer J.Lattik left the following words when Estonia faced the hard time, "An Estonian loves his home and his country so much that he may weep for them, weep as if he were weeping for his children...this kind of love is stronger than anything, stronger even than death."
タリン郊外の「エストニア民俗野外博物館」を訪れたとき、クラフト市が開催されていました。そのとき私はエストニアの民芸が、今も変わらず暮らしのそばにあることを感じました。人々は伝統的な手工芸品を愛し、毎日の生活に自然に採り入れています。エストニア人が自国の文化を愛する気持ちもひしひしと伝わってきます。エストニア人作家J.Lattik氏は自国について次のような言葉を残しています。"An Estonian loves his home and his country so much that he may weep for them, weep as if he were weeping for his children...this kind of love is stronger than anything, stronger even than death."

I also found that Estonia has own nice brands, such as drinks, cosmetics, textiles or so. I've never seen them in other countries, even in Russia. However the quality and the design are excellent, attractive enough for the international market.
それからエストニア生まれのブランドをよく見かけました。飲料やコスメ、テキスタイルなどです。他国、近隣のロシアでさえ見かけたことのないブランドでしたが、品質に優れデザインもとても素敵なので、世界中に売れる可能性を秘めている・・・と思ったりもしました。
