Russian wooden toys and poetic world

Time is flying, we'll soon celebrate Christmas. Are you ready for giving nice gifts to your children?  My kids always want some fancy toys from TV ad which I don't like so much.  I believe that simple toys are better to develop their creativity. In old times, Russian people did a fantastic job of making wooden toys. You might remind Matryoshka doll, yes, of course it is world famous Russian folk art. However, Russian wooden toys have more variety.

This week I visited one of my favourite museums, All-Russian Decorative Applied and Folk Art Museum to see the exhibition, "Bogorodskoye Poem ".  This exhibition shows us more than 170examples of  Russian wooden toys made in Bogorodskoye 19c to 20c.

時間がたつのはあっという間。もうクリスマスですね。子ども達へのプレゼントはもう用意されましたか？
うちの子ども達はコマーシャルで見たおもちゃを欲しがって私を困らせます。もっとシンプルで創造力を育むようなおもちゃで遊んでほしいと願います。昔のロシア人は、木製のすばらしいおもちゃを作りました。木製おもちゃというと、マトリョーシカを思い出すかもしれません。もちろんそれは世界中で有名なロシアの代表的おもちゃですが、それだけではありません。もっと色々な種類があるんです。

今週私は、「全ロシア　装飾・応用とフォークアートミュージアム」を訪れました。『ボゴロドスコエの詩 』というタイトルでロシアの木製おもちゃが170点以上展示されているからです。

 Bogorodskoye is the name of a village near Sergiyev Posad. This village was the place to trade in wooden products and carvers started to make wooden toys in 17-18c. At the beginning, the design was simply one or a couple of figures of horses, hens or peasants.  In the half of 19c, it was eventually sophisticated to create more complicated and large scale compositions. Looking through the history, bears, rabbits, hens and some other small animals are always popular figures. They look like human beings,  playing and working together. I love it, very funny.
 ボゴロドスコエとはある村の名前で、１７～１８世紀ごろ木製製品の取引が盛んな場所だったそうです。そこで木製おもちゃが産まれました。当初のデザインは１体か２，３体が組み合っただけ、馬や鶏や農夫の人形が多かったそう。それが徐々に洗練されていき、複雑なデザインや大きなものが創られるようになりました。
どの時期を見ても、熊やうさぎは人気なデザインのようです。まるで人間のように遊んだり、働いている様子がなんとも愛らしくおかしいです。

Some large sculptures represents the village life with wooden houses and peasants. Peasant figures are very tiny, but we can see their faces. Each peasant has different face and expression, so that we can imagine how they are going. It is just amazing.

大きな作品の中には、村の暮らしを表現したものもあります。木造のお家と農夫たち。この人形達はとっても小さいのですが各々が違った表情をしているのには驚きです。

Social trend always influenced on Russian art, which is seen in this exhibition as well.  This is one example,  the bear looking into space with a telescope. It was made in 1960s when Soviet union explored space.

社会の潮流はロシアのアートに大きな影響を及ぼしてきました。木製おもちゃも例外ではありません。一例として熊さんが望遠鏡で宇宙をのぞいているこの人形。ソ連が宇宙開拓で世にインパクトを残した1960年ごろのものです。

Indeed, it is worth to visit with children. Around Christmas time, they have special workshops to show carving. It will give great inspiration to children, should be better than plastic toys.

この展示、お子様連れにとってもおすすめです。クリスマスの時期には彫刻テクニックを学べるワークショップも予定されているようです。子どもにプラスチックのおもちゃをあげるより、ずっと素敵な親子体験になるのではないでしょうか？

Inspiration from the sky

The golden autumn has already gone and the last leaves left on trees.
This year, October was much better than September, we had some beautiful sunny days.  It is last minute sunshine before winter, so people stay outside to bask.  Autumn sky is high....so high..here in Moscow.

On a clear day, I always look forward sunset and twilight time. Around this time, the sky has such a subtle layers of pink, purple, light blue and grey.   Russia's sky is really amazing!  Absolutely ART!!
The color of sky is thought to be affected by the latitude. The latitude of Moscow is 55°45′N and my home,Japan is 34° 32' (Osaka). At the place of high latitude, the sky looks more blue and purple. Meanwhile, low latitude makes the sky more yellow or gold.  In Japan the image of sunset is powerful and warm, but in Mosocow the sunset looks so delicate like a crystal.

The other day, I saw the sky like this. How do you imagine?

For me, it is "Swan lake".
Right after the sunset, the light white cloud appeared like a bird, then about 20mins later it became two birds.
They looks like a couple of swans in the red sky. Wow, so romantic! Tchaikovsky might have seen the sky like this.

Also I had a fun with my imagination.

Sunset time...almost the end of the day, open the window to get some inspiration from the sky.


「黄金の秋」は早々と過ぎさり、最後まで残った葉が寂しげに揺れています。
今年は９月が実に湿っぽかったので、１０月にやっと気持ちの良い秋晴れを迎えることができました。
長い冬の前に太陽を浴びるラストチャンスなので、人々は外で日向ぼっこして過ごします。
モスクワの秋空は・・・どこまでも高いです。
きれいに晴れた日は、夕暮れ時が楽しみなんです。その時間、空はなんとも微妙なピンク、むらさき、ライトブルー、グレーの層を重ねます。ロシアの空はいつも驚きを与えてくれる、これ以上にないＡＲＴです。
空の色は、緯度の影響を受けるといわれます。モスクワの緯度は北緯５５度。日本（大阪）は北緯３４度。高緯度の地域では、空の色は青みや紫みが強くなります。一方、緯度が低くなるにつれて黄色や金色っぽい色味が増します。日本の夕焼けといえば、力強く暖かな黄色のイメージなのですが、モスクワではとても繊細なイメージ。クリスタルのような輝きです。

先日、こんな空を見ました。どんな風に想像されますか？
私は「白鳥の湖」と思いました！日没直後にはうっすらとした白い雲が、水鳥のように現れ・・その２０分後には２羽の鳥になっていたのです。それも夕焼けの赤い空を背景にして、まるでカップルの白鳥のよう。チャイコフスキーもこんな空を眺めていたのでしょうか・・？
こんな風に想像して遊ぶのは、ちょっとした楽しみです。「炎」　「絵の具」　「波紋」　なんて名づけてみました。

夕暮れ時・・・・一日の終わりに、窓を開けて空からひらめきを受けてみませんか？
 

Little artists in autumn

I've been quiet for a while and now it's time to restart this blog!
While I was away, Moscow welcome new season. Here, autumn is too short, but stunning.
I could say it's the most beautiful time of a whole year. Lots of trees change their color into yellow at the same time,
so we can see truly "Golden Autumn".

Golden Autumn let Russian people to be an artist. They can't help making something with golden leaves.
For example, a leaf crown.  Not only children make this, but also adults are keen on collecting leaves and
creating beautiful ones. Then...of course taking pictures. Russian people really love photo shooting!

In my opinion, this culture tells us how Russian people learn things by nature.
From early in their childhood, they are familiar with creating something by natural things.
I am always excited to see wonderful kid's work at my son's Russian kindergarten.
It is like a little museum.  Around entrance, corridors and each class room are decorated with colorful arts.

Especially, mushroom is a popular motif in Russia.
I heard that mushroom picking is a kind of seasonal event, lots of people enjoy it at Dacha(Summer house)
countryside.  They know how to spend pleasant time in nature. This is what I  like Russia.

しばらくブログを離れていましたが、そろそろ再スタートします！
離れている間にモスクワは新しい季節を迎えました。ここでの秋はとっても短いのですが、それはそれは美しい。
おそらく一年中で一番美しいとき。多くの木々はいっぺんに黄色に色を変えます。
文字通り「黄金の秋」が楽しめるのです。

黄金の秋はロシア人をアーティストにします。金色の葉っぱで何かを創ることが大好きなのです。
たとえば、葉っぱの冠。子ども達だけの楽しみでなく、大人たちも葉っぱを拾うのに熱中し、
美しい冠を作るんです。そして創ったあとは、もちろん撮影会！！ロシア人は本当に写真撮影大好き！

この秋の楽しみ方、ロシア人がどのように自然からものを学ぶかを教えてくれるように思います。
きっと幼ないときから、自然物を使って何かを創造することに親しんでいるのでしょう。
息子の幼稚園を訪ねるとき、いつも楽しみにしているのは子ども達の作品です。
それはまるで小さな美術館。園の入り口、廊下や各教室は色とりどりのアートで飾られています。

キノコは、ロシアでとりわけ人気のあるモチーフです。
ロシアでは昔から、キノコ狩りが季節行事になっていて、郊外のダーチャと呼ばれる別荘で楽しむそうです。
人々は自然の中での楽しみ方をよく知っています。そういう素朴なところ、私の好きなロシアです。

 

Moscow stories of 20th centuries in photo exhibition

This summer has been busy, after Greece we flew to Japan and stay for a while. Before leaving Moscow, I really wanted to visit one photo exhibition " Moscow stories. The twentieth century Part 2(1960-1990's)".  Unfortunately I missed Part 1 and looked forward to Part 2.  Indeed, it was a great exhibition, never let me down.  It is held at "Center of Photography Lumiere brothers" which is located one corner of the former Chocolate factory"Red October"(Krasny Oktyabr ). I highly recommend this center to those who like Russian photos or photographers.

今年の夏はもりだくさん。ギリシャの次は日本に一時帰国しています。
帰国する前に、モスクワでどうしても見たい写真展がありました。"Moscow stories. The twentieth century.Part II (1960-1990's) ".  第1部を残念ながら見逃してしまったので、待望の待望の第2部です。期待を裏切りません。すばらしい内容でした。場所はCenter of Photography Lumiere brothers. 「Red October」チョコレート工場跡の一角にあります。ロシアに関する作品を見るなら、ぜったいにおすすめです。

What is Moscow story at that time?(1960-90s)
It was a new era after Stalin died, dream for the cosmos, economical development, better life for citizens, Moscow Olympic and the collapse of Soviet in the end.  Most of photos are just a part of ordinaly secenery of the city, but we can read lots of stories by people's face and the shadows of buildings or cars.

この時代のMoscow Story とは？
それはスターリン死後の新しい時代。経済成長、市民生活の向上、宇宙への夢、オリンピック、そしてソ連崩壊へ。多くの写真は日常的な風景を切り取ったものにかかわらず、人の表情、ビルや車の影が、実に多くのことを物語っている。

The introduction for this exhibition was very impressive.
“City is architecture, people and something that comes into being between them. This photograph that is capable of conveying the most subtle nuance and the atmosphere of a big city."
It is very true, these photos convey the atomosphere of each time. It comes into me so naturally without any shock.

If you like to feel afterglow of photos, just drop at the cafe library by the exhibits hall. You can spend a precious time with lovely tea and library books regarding photography. Perfect place for photo lovers.


この展示会の序文にとても印象深い言葉が記されてありました。
“City is architecture, people and something that comes into being between them. This photograph that is capable of conveying the most subtle nuance and the atmosphere of a big city."  （街とは建築、人そしてその合間に存在するものでできている。これらの写真は大都市に存在する微妙なニュアンスや雰囲気を伝えてくれる。）
本当にその通り。空気感が伝わる写真展だと思いました。ものすごい迫力とか衝撃を伴うのではなく、ふんわりと実に軽やかに。

写真の余韻にひたりたい方におすすめなのは、併設されているカフェ兼ライブラリー。たくさん並んだ写真関連の本が読み放題。美味しいお茶を飲みながら、写真好きにはたまらない至福のときを過ごせます。

Design & Colors in Greece - from Santorini island

The second part of design note from Greece. 
About 5hours from Athens by highspeed ferry, we arrived in one of  beautiful islands of the Aegean sea, Santorini island.
引き続きギリシャから、街のデザイン・ノート。
アテネから高速フェリーに乗ること約4時間、私たちはエーゲ海に浮かぶ美しい島、サントリーニに到着しました。

The landscape of Santorini island is unique. It is surrounded by a stiff cliff and Greek style white houses line along the ridge, so the island looks like crowned with snow. Especially Oia town, which is located in northern edge, has a wonderful view like a heaven on the earth.  Blue sky and sea, and pretty white houses stand between them. When I walk there, I felt like floating on clouds.
断崖絶壁の切り立った島のてっぺんに、雪のようにきらめく白い家々。
島北端にあるイアの街はとりわけ美しく、その景観は地上の楽園さながら。空と海がつながったかのような青・・・その真中に連なる白い家並み。まるで雲の上を浮遊しているような気分になります。

 Along the main street of Oia, there are lots of nice shops, cafes and galleries. They are all sophisticated and colored in blue and white, so this street is a part of beautiful landscape, not like a typical unsightly souvenior streets.
イアのメインストリート沿いには、洗練されたショップやギャラリー、カフェが軒を連ねます。
そのどれもが景観と調和した、青と白。だからこのストリートは単なる土産物街にはならない、美しいランドスケープの一部なのです。

As walking along the street, I noted one remarkable design of the town. That is "Door". Greek while houses have colorful door or gate at the entrance. We can overlook blue sky and sea through the door.....so I named it, "Heaven's door". Each door is supposed to be handpainted by the houseowner and parcially original wooden color appears. It's so lovely.
 ストリートを歩きながら、私が気になった街のデザイン。それは扉です。白い家の正面玄関や表門に、とてもカラフルな扉が。その扉の向こうには、青い空や海が広がっている・・・だから私は「天国の扉」と名付けました。
天国の扉の素敵なところは、お家の人のハンドペイントということ。ところどころ木目が見えているのが、なんとも味わい深い。

While we stayed in Santorini island, we met the local photographer featuring these doors. His name is Nikos Rigopoulos. He takes Santorini in monochrome and only remains colors of doors, which impressed me a lot. (You can see his works by this website. http://www.photos-santorini.com/ )We visited his garalley located nearby the sunset view point. From his garalley, we saw that the sky and sea were changing the colors every moment. I thought this amazing view was like a part of his works as well.

Design & Colors of Greece - from Athens

Hi, it's already the middle of August! Time flies. I returned back from nice summer vacation in Greece.
I just want to note some impressive elements of Greek design.
気がつけば8月も半ば、みなさん夏を楽しまれていますか？
しばらくモスクワを離れ、ギリシャ旅行に出かけていました。印象に残った街のデザイン、残しておきたいと思います。

At first, Athens.  Honestly I didn't know about Greece very well apart from ancient heritage.
This time I walked around the city and found the attractive place called Plaka, which is the oldest part of Athens. If you get the top of Acropolis(the historical site of Partheon), you will see lots of tiny buildings with pretty red roofs. That's Plaka.
まずはアテネ。アテネといえば古代遺跡・・くらいの予備知識しかなかった私。
街の魅力はパルテノン神殿から見える、この赤茶色の屋根の下に待っていますよ。

Architecture
Most of old architectures in Plaka were buit in Neo-Classicism style, which was the revival of ancient Greek or Roman style and very popular in the late of 18C all around Europe. Many of Russian pre-revolutionary architectres have same style, so I found some similarity between Athens and Moscow. Athens's originality is seen on the roof, the red tile. I love the color contrast of blue sky and red roof. This red tile is designed like a fuman face. I suppose it comes from the ancient design, because I saw the similar one in Acropolis museum.
Tiny decorative balcony is another attraction for  pedestrians who pass by streets.

プラカ地区に残る建築様式の多くは、新古典主義（ネオクラシシズム）。18世紀後半にヨーロッパ全土で流行した古代ギリシャ・ローマの建築のリヴァイバルです。それはモスクワに残る革命前の建造物と同じ様式なので、どことなく似ていますね。ちょっと異なるのは、この赤瓦。アテネの真っ青な空によく映えます。瓦のデザインは一様に、顔のついたもの。アクロポリス博物館にも展示されていたので、古代から伝承されているものと思われます。
そしてかわいらしい小さなバルコニーのデザインも、通りかかる人を楽しませてくれます。

Market
Athen is truly HOT, not only from sunshine, also from the energy of market.  It is absolutely fun to see each stall's display, because it is dynamic and colorful!  The owner suddenly appeared behind piles of goods and say 'hello' with friendly smile. It caught my heart  to stay there for a while.

アテネの夏の暑さは太陽だけじゃない、無数のマーケットがにぎわうエネルギー。その陳列はカラフルかつダイナミック！山と積まれた品物のかげから、ちらりと覗く人懐こい笑顔に、思わず足を止めてしまいます。

In Athens, we have a lot of choices to have a break at cafe. Normaly cafe has big sunscreens or greens which protect us from too strong sunshine. Each table is placed close to next one, so chatting with next person happens easily. Greek cafe is a great place to make friends as well.  Little olive trees are often placed on the table, people have a peaceful time with it.

歩きつかれたらカフェで休憩。大きな日よけと覆いかぶさるくらいのグリーンが、灼熱の太陽から身を守ってくれます。小さなテーブルと椅子。お隣さんと仲良くなれる距離感がいいですね。ギリシャは世界大3位のオリーブ生産国。さりげなく置かれた鉢植えにも心癒されます。

Lastly, symbolic secenery from The new Acropolis museum.
It is quite new, opened in 2009. I was impressed with the glass facade reflecting old building and historic remains.
I wish that Greece get through the economical crisis and this glass facade will reflect brigher future as well.
さいごに、印象的な光景。2009年にリニューアルオープンしたアクロポリス博物館です。
ガラスファサードに映る古い建物と遺跡、新旧のコントラストが心に残りました。
経済危機を脱し、輝かしい未来も映るようになればいいなぁと。。。

GUM's adverts and window display in Soviet time

I continue the same subject, about the photo exhibit dedicated to GUM's 120th anniversary.
It consists of 4parts; 1) The beginning of 20C  2)Post Stalin 1950-1960s 3)Post Perestroika 2000~  4)Christian Dior show at the Red squre in 1959.  Among hundreds of photos, I select some as my highlights.

前回にひきつづき、グム百貨店内で行われている、120周年記念写真展のお話です。
構成としては、１）創立当初：1900年前後の写真　２）スターリン死後：1950年～1960年　３）ソ連崩壊後：2000年～　＋４）1959年　Christian Dior ファッションショー＠赤の広場　となっています。
数え切れないほどの写真がある中での私のハイライトは・・・

Of course they are representitives of Russian avand-garde artists. 
Once we see their works, never forget their unsual layout and color sense.  These posters were more than store's adverts, they were a kind of propaganda as well.  One poster says, "В  Гуме  Все  (Everything is in GUM)" which seems to be a strong slogan with national pride.

ロシア　アヴァンギャルドを代表する二人の共作が数点、展示されています。
大胆な構図と独特の色彩感、一度見ると忘れられなくなります。
彼らの作品は、百貨店の宣伝といえども一種のプロパガンダ（政治的宣伝）。
「В  Гуме  Все  グムにはすべてがある！」という国の威信をかけた、強いメッセージが伝わってきます。

It was the time after Stalin died and GUM was restored and got back its beautiful appearance.
These window dislays are very artistic....like a stage of theatres.   I can imagine that people was dreaming with these delicate and romantic decorations.

スターリンの死後、修復されて華やかさを取り戻したころのグムです。
さすが舞台芸術が盛んなお国がら・・・芸術性が高いです。
繊細でロマンティックなディスプレイは、当時の人々にとってまさに夢の舞台だったのでしょうね。

It was also the time of economical growing.  The following photos show us the people fascionated by modern products.
そして経済成長とともに、物質的に豊かになってきたころ。新商品に釘付けな表情、いいですね～。

Last month, I was surprised that the fashion show was held near the red squre. In fact,  it already happened in Soviet era. Dior was the first foreign fashion brand which took a place the collection show on the red squre.
In the pictures, I love the contrast between the hard image of Soviet and the soft image of Dior models.

Diorは海外ブランドとしてはじめて、１９５９年に赤の広場でコレクションショーを行ったそうです。
男性的なイメージの赤の広場を、颯爽と歩くモデルの素敵なこと！！　意外性があって面白い写真たちです。

The biggest promotion is "Bicycle".  Oh, yes, this year the rental bike system started in the city, the consumer trend should be a kind of ecology?  But the next raw is occupied with the brand new Audi cars!!
Well..."В  Гуме  Все  (Everything is in GUM)".   That's very true.

で、今現在のグムはどんな風？？
一つの大きなプロモーションは「自転車」。市内でレンタルバイク・システムも稼動して、やっぱりエコブームか・・
と思いきや、となりでは「アウディ」が通路いっぱいいっぱい展示されているし。
今も昔も「В  Гуме  Все  グムにはすべてがある！」　なっとくです。
