Brighten up the city with FENCES

Do you know what they are doing? 
さて、彼らは何をしているのでしょうか？


Chatting? Sketching in the park?　　 
No,  they are PAINTING  FENCES.   

おしゃべりでしょうか？公園でスケッチでしょうか？
いいえ、実はフェンスのペンキ塗りをしているのです。





In Moscow,  real spring birds are public painters.
Right after snow has gone, they come up and paint all fences in the city.
Actually these fences are covered with snow in winter time and colors come off.
Every year painters repaint and make them brighter again.
When I see it happens, I am quite sure that we have no more snow this spring.

Today I focus on "the design of public fences".
In Moscow we see so many public fences, around buildings, playgrounds, walking paths etc.
Their sizes look all same, probably standerized in Soviet era.
However, the unique feature is each fence has different pattern as you can see below.
Some of them are painted in two colors like green and yellow, blue and yellow.

モスクワで春を告げる鳥は、このペンキ塗りのおじさんたちかもしれません。
雪がなくなるとすぐに現れ、街中のフェンスにペンキを塗るのです。
これらのフェンスは冬の間、雪に埋もれていて色がはげてしまいます。
そこで毎年、ペンキ塗り達がきれいな色に塗りなおすのです。
この光景を見ると、もう今年の春は雪が降らないな～と確信します。
今日の私のトピックは、「公共フェンスのデザイン」。
モスクワにはすごくたくさんフェンスがあるんです。ビルの周り、公園の周り、歩道の周りなど。
そのどれもが、おおよそ同じサイズ。おそらくソビエト時代に統一されたのでしょう。
でも面白いのは、それぞれのフェンスが違う模様でデザインされていることです。
中には緑色と黄色、ブルーと黄色など、2色塗りされているものもあります。

 

As a fence, I doubt their strengths, but they work as nice little decoration in public space.
When I walk by  fences, I feel something heartwarmed, because they are all hand painted.
Among monotonous Soviet buildings (see My Sweet "дом" ) ,
they brignten up the city and people's heart in spring.
フェンスとしての強度は疑問ですが（とても頼りないので）、公共スペースの可愛い装飾として活躍しています。
このフェンスのそばを歩くと、なんともほのぼのした気持ちになるのは、人の手で素朴にペイントされているからでしょうか？
春に街や人の心を明るくしてくれる、街の名脇役と私は思っています。

 

My Sweet "дом"

"дом"<Dom> is the word stands for a house or a building.
Generally when we talk about "дом", it means apartments.
Large numbers of apartments are uniformed in several types and standing in orderly way.
When I first saw them, I felt like Iwas in the block city. Exactly same size, same distance and same quality.
The design details and shapes of buildings tell us the Russian history.
They have been followed political trends and clearly reflected in apperance and quality.
I walked around the city and found some types of "дом".
ロシア語で「ドム」は、家や建物を意味します。
日常会話の中でドムの話というと、住んでいるアパートのことになります。
モスクワで見られるアパートの多くは、画一的で整然と並んでいて・・・
はじめて見たときは、まるでブロックの街にいるみたい！！と思ったものです。
デザインや形に着目すると、いくつかのパターンが見えてきます。
ソ連時代「ドム」は政府によって計画的に建てられたので、年代によってその企画が一様なのです。
街歩きしながら、いくつかのパターンを見つけてみました。

1.Pre-revolutionary (built in the late 19th to 20th)　－1917年のロシア革命以前、社会主義国家になる前です。
My favorite one. Very charming with beautiful facades and antique entrances.
Colors are pretty as well, most of them are painted in pale pink, blue, yellow and green.
私の好きな様式です。ヨーロッパの影響の受けた美しいファサードとアンティークな風情の玄関。
色合いもとっても可愛くて、淡いピンク、ブルー、イエロー、グリーン。並んでいると砂糖菓子みたい。

2.Stalin-era buildings(built in 1930-1950)－スターリン様式
The most Powerful design, as Stalin was. We see giant gray buildings on the main streets.
In residential area, we also see beautiful brick buildings built in this era.
スターリンの権力を存分にアピールしている様式です。とても男性的で威圧的。
住宅地には立派なレンガ造りのドムがあり、これもスターリン様式と呼ばれています。

3.Panel and block buildings(1960-1990)－パネル・ブロック様式
This is what I called "Block city".  In this era, communist leaders tried to resolve housing issue for ordinary people
and created low cost buildings.
スターリンの死後、一般市民にアパートを供給するため経済的かつ機能的な住居が開発されました。
私が「ブロックの街」とよんだ様式です。味気ないけど、ミニマムなデザインが面白い。

4..Modern developments(2000~)－近代建築
During the last decades, new rich Russians demanded for modern luxrious apatments
and a significant numbers of high-end complexes appeared.
Of course, their design don't follow political matters any more. Some have odd looking in the original landscape.
2000年以降、上昇するロシア経済とともに現れたニューリッチの需要にこたえ、
豪華で近代的な設備を伴うアパートが次々と登場しました。もちろんもう社会主義国家ではないので、
デザインは自由。周囲と全くマッチしていないものも・・・（というか、これもブロックみたい）

It is very important to find a nice "дом to spend long long winter time.
Most of expats like us prefer to live in the modern apartments,  because it's simply comfortable
especially with children. 
But I think.....as long as we live in such  new buildings, we never know the real taste of Moscow life.
ロシアは冬が長いので、よい「ドム」を見つけることは本当にたいせつ。
私を含めて多くの外国人は、2000年以降にできたアパートに住んでいます。
とくに子連れの場合、それ以前の建物に住むのは設備的に難しく感じます。
でも本当は、歴史のあるドムに住んで真のモスクワライフを味わってみたいとも思います・・・

 

Russian letters & Typography

In the first few posts, I look back on my impression of 2years ago when I first came.
As  I wrote in introduction, Moscow was much westernized than I thought.
However, Russian letters were exotic enough to lure me out.
In the city, I found it very difficult to get anywhere without understanding the language.
Streets were covered with hundreds of advertisements and signs written in only Russian. Dazzling!
I didn't understand most of them, so they just looked like samples of  typography.

モスクワに来た2年前にさかのぼって、印象深かったことを書こうと思います。
イントロダクションでお話ししたように、街は思ったよりも西洋化が進んでいました。
日本でもお馴染のカフェやブランドもたくさん見かけましたが、ロシア文字（キリル文字）で
書かれているだけでとってもエキゾチック！街歩きせずにいられなくなりました。
通りに広告規制などないのでしょう、所せましと広告・看板が雑然と立ち並ぶさまに目がくらむ。
意味がわからないからこそ、なんだか面白い！キリル文字タイポグラフィの見本のように思えました。

Let me show you some...

1. Well known logo design　
These logos are seen on any main streets.  I also put world famous logos in Russian version below. Can you find them?
よく目にする商標デザイン。世界中でお馴染のロゴ、キリル文字バージョンもあります。わかりますか？

 

2. Public signs
さまざまな標識。絵も文字もすごくシンプル。

3.Other signs
You can see wide range of font types. Some of them seem to be a kind of Avant-garde.
街歩きしてちょっと目にとまったデザイン。アバンギャルド風なものが目立ちます。



On the streets many of buildings are uniformed in Soviet style.  Only signs are too much colorful.
This townscape isn't  sophisticated as Europa, but I like this MISMATCH.
ストリート沿いはソ連時代に造られた、画一的で色みの少ない建物が多い中、看板だけがやけにカラフル。
街並みはヨーロッパのそれのように洗練されていませんが、建物と看板のミスマッチな感じが
混沌とした雰囲気を醸し出し、なんともモスクワっぽいなあと感じるのです。





 

Introduction -behind city modernization

Hi, there.  To begin with, I tell you about this blog.
It was two years ago, I first arrived in Moscow. 
I was very excited to see this huge mysterious country, but after 30mins drive from the airport,
my expectation turned into a little dissapointment.
I already recognized that Moscow is not another world any more.
On the way, I saw some shop signs like; IKEA,Auchan supermarket, H&M,GAP,ZARA and
of course, Starbacks and Macdonald's.  
At a glance, it was just a megacity and nothing surprised me except onion shaped Russian churches.
Behind modernization, Moscow seems to be losing its identity.

Moscow city is changing every day. The old church is left between construction site and new business center.

Then I started adventure to find out something original.
My focus is not only typical Russian art such as ballet, church, kremlin and so on.
I more like local things, design details that I can see in my daily life.
Some of them are likely to disappear in next 5years, because everything is being renewed.
Whenever I saw those things, I took pictures and now it became huge numbers.
This blog is the place to store them.
I hope it will grow into the collections of unique design.
Also this is the place where I can report my activities to my family and friends around the world,
so I try to write in Japanese and English.  (my English is not good enough though..) 

こんにちは！モスクワに来て2年がたちます。
夫と幼い子ども達と泣き笑いの日々も少し落ち着き、今更ながらにブログを始めてみようと思います。
昔から旅が好きです。それも裏路地や地元のバスに揺られるような・・・気ままな街歩きが。
歩きながら、その土地のカルチャーを肌で感じることが大好きなのです。
モスクワに初めて来たときも、これから出会う未知の世界にワクワクしていました。
でも空港から車で走っている間に見たものは、イケア、Ｈ＆Ｍをはじめとするファーストファッションブランド、
もちろんマクドナルドやスターバックス・・・・少しがっかりしました。
グローバルな出店競争の末、世界はどこもかしこも似た風景になりつつあるように感じました。
そのうえ、ロシアの急速な経済発展は1秒ごとに街の姿を変えていきます。
流れ込んできた外からのものに、この国らしさ・この街らしさが失われてしまったかのようです。

そこで私は時間を見つけては、じっくり街歩きするようになりました。
観光でおなじみの場所はもちろんですが、私がもっとも興味惹かれるのはやっぱり街の片隅。
なにげない風景の中にこそ、ロシアらしさが凝縮されています。
街がどんどん近代化していく中で、それらは姿を消しつつあります。
なくなってしまうその前に、このブログに残しておこうと思います。
それから趣味のグループで、毎週のようにギャラリーや建築物を見学しています。
私が出会ったすてきなデザインの数々を、紹介できたらなぁと思います。
各国のお友達とも交流できたらと思い、英語で書いていますが下手なのでご容赦ください＾＾
