The Orange day

Today's topic is a bit behind the right time, but it's so much Russian culture that I want to write.
The day we came back to Moscow was the biggest national holiday, called "Victory day".
On 9th May marks the final defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Union in World War II.
Every year Russia celebrates massively, that memorial ceremony is held at the red square, military parade on the main street, airforces fly in the sky and fireworks finalize this big event at several places in Moscow.

Military festive event is not my topic, but it is very interesting to see the whole city(even country) is decorated with Orange color as the symbol of victory. Yes, I found the orange on the taxi from the airport, "The ribbon of St. George."

少し時期を逃してしまった内容ですが、とてもロシアらしいので書き残したいと思います。
私たちがデンマークから帰ってきた日は、ロシアでもっとも盛り上がる祝日、「大祖国戦争戦勝記念日」でした。
それは1945年5月9日に、ソビエト連邦がナチス・ドイツ連合諸国に対して勝利したことを記念し、戦争功労者を
称える日となっています。毎年5月9日には、メインストリートで軍事パレード、赤の広場で記念式典、さら空には戦闘機が飛行するという盛大さ。戦争における自国の功績を称える・・・という視点は、日本の「終戦記念日」と大きく異なります。
軍事的イベントは私のトピックではないとして、面白いのはVictory Dayのシンボルとして街（国？）全体がオレンジ色に飾られること。空港から乗ったタクシーにもオレンジ色はありました、「ゲオルギー・リボン」。（聖ジョージのリボン）







 Orange and black striped pattern is thought that orange means "fire" and black means "gunpowder".
It is also thought to be derived from the colours of the original Russian imperial coat of arms and used for the part of Order of St. George.
The week before Victory day, the ribbons are seen widely, because they are freely handed out to the civilians since 60th anniversary in 2005.  The motto of this action is  "We remember, we are proud!", encouraging self-esteemed as a Russian.
The ribbons of St. George are usually tied at the car, handbag and clothes as you can see in the picture.

オレンジ色と黒色のストライプ柄。オレンジ色は「火」、黒色は「火薬」を意味しているそう。古くはロシア帝国時代から、祖国護衛のために健闘した軍人に与えられる高位の勲章デザインです。
毎年、記念日の前になると街中でほんとうに良く見かけます。と、いうのは60周年の2005年から街角でリボンが無料配布されるようになったからです。この運動のモットーは"We remember, we are proud!"だそうで・・・愛国心を感じます。
ゲオルギーリボンはこんな風に、車やかばんや洋服に結ばれるているんですよ。

Orange color is not only ribbon, but also posters at shops or restaurants and signs on streets.
オレンジ色なのはリボンだけではありません。
この時期になるとお店のポスター、ストリートの看板もオレンジ色です。

Of course, around the red squre turned into orange.
そしてもちろん赤の広場周辺も・・・

Meanwhile, this year I found subtle changes.
In my memories of last two years, larger numbers of signs were seen and the design was so military that I felt scared.
However, this year seemed to be less signs on streets. Also some design was not typical orange one, looked like just a normal advertisement with any other colors. I don't know if my impression was true or not, but I would say this change may reflect the strong Russia in new era. Russia remembers the victory of 1945, and also looks into the future.

でも今年、私は少しの変化を感じました。
私の記憶では、例年看板の数はもっと多かったように思います。
デザインもかなり軍事色が強く、外国人の私には戦争を鼓舞しているように思え、少し怖く感じたものです。
ところが今年はメインストリートを車で走っていても、気づかない程度の数。典型的なオレンジ色だけでなく、普通の広告と見まちがえてしまうようなさわやかな配色のものも・・・過去の功績のみならず、「強いロシア」をめざす社会の変化のようにも思えました。
